As pressure on young peoples time continues and screen-based activities become more prevalent, GYC is actively encouraging children and young people to become more outdoorsy and get into the game of golf by revitalising its Junior Section.

The Junior section had suffered due to the Covid-19 pandemic, but Teaching Professional Alexander Holmes was determined to do his bit to attract new, young players back.

Two sessions have been running since April and throughout the Summer with approx 30 Juniors now actively participating, meeting new friends, playing and improving their golf.

Alex Holmes, Teaching Professional said: “Most of our Juniors are of a young age, with some never having held a golf club before, but their progress is amazing and they are working towards their first handicaps”

It’s brilliant to see them outside, being sociable and having fun, you can see their confidence improve after each session and incredibly the more experienced juniors are already competing in and around the County.”

Although GYC recognises there is still some work to do to develop the Junior Section so that it reflects the needs, wants and motivation of today’s young people, it is confident it is headed in the right direction.

Tim Starbuck, General Manager, GYC, added, “Thanks to Alex and Simon, our members and dedicated volunteers such as Libby Sturrock and Carol Delf who tirelessly support the weekly sessions and fundraise for much-needed equipment we’re seeing the Junior Section grow.”

“We’ve invested in the Junior Golf Passport scheme and installed Blue tees which provide a shorter and easier course for the smaller juniors to develop their skills on. And thanks to the Saturday boys and other members we’ve been able to purchase storage for all of the equipment. It’s all very positive.

If you have a budding golfer or active one at home, get in touch to join a taster session.
